Let The Sunshine In!
Tips for Cleaning Windows, Inside and Out
Anyone who has tried to clean their own windows understands that it’s not always as simple as it sounds. Even for those who have done it themselves for years might benefit from these window cleaning tips compiled from the experts.
We’re already getting some beautiful sunny days even though summer isn’t even here yet. It may be that on one of those sunny days that you open the curtains and crack a window that you realize just how dirty your windows have become. Dust, dirt, watermarks, fingerprints and even smashed bugs may hinder the natural light entering your home. If you take this opportunity to get out the “streak free” window cleaner purchased from the store, there might be a better and less expensive solution you can try. All you’ll need is some vinegar, a bucket, liquid dish soap and a good microfiber cloth or a sponge.
- Fill the bucket with cool water and a few drops of liquid dish soap.
- Use your cloth or sponge to go over the surface of the window. Start the top and work your way down. This will remove some of the heavy dirt and debris.
- Spray the window thoroughly with the vinegar and water solution. If you prefer, you could use one capful of ammonia mixed with two gallons of water.
- When it comes to wiping up, use a clean, lint-free towel, the black-and-white pages of a newspaper, or dry, clean paper towels. Dry the window completely using a back-and-forth motion from top to bottom.
- If you can still see dirt or streaks, spray and dry again. If you haven’t washed your windows in a while, they might require another round.
- While you might be tempted to clean your windows on a hot sunny day, it is actually best to work on a cool, overcast day so that the window-cleaning solutions don’t dry to quickly on your windows.
- Outside windows will most always be dirtier so it’s a good idea to first rinse the windows with a hose.
- For windows higher up, you could try a sponge mop or a long mop on a pole.
- For outside windows, you can dry them with a rubber-bladed squeegee. Work the squeegee from top to bottom and wipe it with a clean dry towel in between each swipe.
- For stubborn dirt and stains, saturate the window with a generous amount of the vinegar and water solution and let stand for several minutes before drying.
- The window screens can be cleaned using water and vinegar in a spray bottle and then rinsing with the hose.
Cleaning your window panes and be a real “pain”, but enjoying the sun shining into your home is priceless.
